Senior Night Gift Ideas for Graduating Players

Senior night is the last regular home game or meet of the season, when a team stops to recognize the players who are graduating. Each senior is announced, usually walks out with family, and is handed something. What that something should be is the question this guide answers.

The ideas are grouped by who is giving, because the team, the booster club and a senior’s own parents are solving three different problems. One note first: we make awards and keepsakes, not gift baskets, blankets or flowers. Those belong on senior night too, and they are listed here because a useful guide includes them.

Two rules that matter more than the gift

  • Every senior gets the same thing. The four-year starter and the player who joined this year are recognized identically. Senior night is not an awards ceremony; those come at the banquet.
  • Check the count twice. Managers, student trainers and injured seniors are part of the class. Ask the coach for the list, then ask a senior whether anyone is missing.

It is also worth asking the athletic office whether the school has guidelines on gifts for student athletes before the boosters commit to anything.

From the team and the underclassmen

These are the gifts that mean the most, because they come from teammates.

  • A poster for each senior, made by a younger player and hung in the gym or along the fence.
  • A letter from an underclassman to the senior who looked after them.
  • A signed ball or piece of equipment, one per senior, signed by the whole team.
  • A decorated locker or parking spot on game day.
  • A short tribute read over the speaker: years on the team, a favorite memory, plans after graduation. Collect these on a form a couple of weeks ahead.

From the boosters or the program

The booster club or the program usually provides the item every senior is handed on the field. It should be the same for all, and ideally the same kind of thing each year so that it becomes the program’s tradition.

  • Flowers or a small bouquet for the senior or for a parent.
  • A framed action photo from the season.
  • A blanket, bag or towel in school colors.
  • A gift basket of snacks and small items.
  • A keepsake award with the senior’s name, number and years, which is the part we make.

Most programs combine two: something to hold for the photograph, such as flowers, and something to keep.

A matching keepsake for each senior

Flowers last a week and a basket is eaten by the weekend. The item that is still in a bedroom ten years later is the one with the name on it.

A senior keepsake is one design made once for each senior, with only the personal details changing. It usually carries:

  • The senior’s name and number.
  • The years on the team, such as 2023 – 2026.
  • The school name, the sport and the team logo or mascot.
  • Sometimes a position, or a short line from the coach.

Because our acrylic is cut to shape and printed in full color, the piece can take the outline of the sport, the mascot or the senior’s number, with a photograph printed on it if the program has one of each player. See team awards for how matching sets work and custom awards for what can be built. For a lighter piece, medallion awards on a ribbon or pins suit a large senior class.

There is no minimum order, so a class of three seniors is as ordinary as a class of thirty. Send the names in one typed list; a typed list is how spelling mistakes are avoided.

Keep the wording identical across the class, apart from the name, number and years. If the coach wants to say something individual to each senior, the tribute read aloud is the place for it. Plaque wording ideas covers how much text fits on a piece.

From parents

What parents give is private and does not need to match anyone else’s. Common choices:

  • A photo book from the first season to the last.
  • A framed jersey or a display for medals and letters.
  • A letter. Handed over at home rather than on the field.
  • A piece of jewelry or a watch with the number or the date.
  • A personal plaque with a favorite photograph and the years played, for a wall at home.

For that last one, a single plaque with a printed photograph is an ordinary order for us.

A planning checklist

  1. At the start of the season: confirm the senior night date and who is organizing it.
  2. Well before the date: get the full list of seniors from the coach, with spellings, numbers and years. Decide what the program is giving and request a quote for anything being made to order, giving the date.
  3. A few weeks ahead: send the tribute form to seniors and assign posters to underclassmen.
  4. The week of: confirm the announcer’s script and the order of names. Check pronunciations.
  5. On the night: lay the items out in walking order, with one person handing them over and a photographer in one fixed spot.

For the announcer, the award ceremony script has a structure that adapts to a senior walk. The awards that are actually competitive, such as most valuable player, belong at the banquet; sports award categories lists them. And if the families want to thank the coach on the same night, see coach gift ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you give seniors on senior night?

Most programs give each senior the same two things: something to hold for the photo, such as flowers, and a keepsake with their name, number and years on the team.

Who pays for senior night gifts?

Usually the booster club or the program, with underclassmen making posters and parents giving something of their own privately. Check whether the school has guidelines first.

Should every senior get the same gift?

Yes. Senior night recognizes the class equally. Individual awards for performance are given at the end-of-season banquet.

What goes on a senior night keepsake?

The senior’s name and number, the years on the team, the school and sport, and the team logo. Keep everything except the personal details identical across the class.

Do you make gift baskets, blankets or flowers?

No. We make the keepsake awards and plaques. The other ideas here are for the team, the boosters and parents to arrange themselves.

Awards for the team as well?

For a matching keepsake per senior, send the list of names, numbers and years with the team logo. We lay out the set on a design proof before anything is produced.
