Motocross Trophy Case Study: From Concept to Race Day

March 27, 2026

How we designed and built custom awards for a real motocross event.

When the organizers of the Apex Regional Dirt Clash approached us, they had a clear problem. Their event had grown from a local weekend race into a major regional series, but their awards hadn’t evolved with them. They needed a complete overhaul of their racing event trophies.

They required awards that matched the scale of their new venue, satisfied high-level sponsors, and gave riders something they actually wanted to display. We took the project from a rough sketch to a podium-ready reality. Here is a complete breakdown of how we handled the design, fabrication, and race-day logistics for this massive build.

Event Overview

The Apex Regional Dirt Clash is a three-day motocross weekend drawing over 600 riders across the Midwest. It features a massive vendor row, factory-supported amateur teams, and a live broadcast.

The event featured 18 different classes, ranging from the 50cc pee-wee division up to the Pro-Am main events. With thousands of spectators and major industry sponsors heavily invested in the weekend, the presentation had to be flawless.

Our team was tasked with producing 54 individual motocross awards to cover first, second, and third place across all 18 classes. The organizers wanted a unified look that still allowed the premier classes to stand out from the amateur divisions.

The Challenge

Creating custom motocross trophies for an event of this scale comes with rigid constraints. The client needed a heavy, substantial award that felt valuable, but they were working with a strict per-unit budget.

Timeline was another major hurdle. We had exactly four weeks from the final design approval to the first gate drop. That left zero room for supply chain delays or fabrication errors.

Additionally, sponsor visibility was a non-negotiable requirement. The title sponsor and three presenting sponsors needed their logos prominently displayed on every single award. The design had to integrate these logos naturally without looking like a messy billboard.

Initial Design Direction

We started by tearing down the client’s previous awards to understand what wasn’t working. We needed a fresh approach to motocross trophy design that felt modern and aggressive.

Concept Development

We presented three distinct concepts to the event organizers. The first was a traditional metal cup, the second was a laser-cut wood and acrylic hybrid, and the third was a heavy-duty, multi-layered acrylic and aluminum structure.

The organizers immediately chose the third option. It allowed for dynamic shapes that mimicked the aggressive angles of modern motocross bikes. It also provided the flat, clean surfaces necessary for high-resolution sponsor branding.

Branding Integration

Integrating multiple logos into a single trophy can easily ruin the aesthetic. Instead of slapping stickers on a base, we used a layered approach to create depth.

The event logo was routed out of a piece of quarter-inch matte black acrylic and placed in the foreground. The presenting sponsor logos were UV-printed on a clear acrylic backplate. This separated the visual elements and gave the sponsors clear visibility without overshadowing the name of the race.

Structural Considerations

A major flaw in many racing event trophies is their center of gravity. Dirt tracks are notoriously windy, and podiums are often set up on uneven ground. Tall, top-heavy awards blow over and shatter before the photos are even taken.

To counter this, we engineered the base to hold 60% of the award’s total weight. We utilized solid half-inch aluminum base plates bolted directly into the primary vertical supports. This ensured that even if a strong gust of wind hit the podium backdrop, the awards would stay firmly planted.

Before & After (Visual Transformation)

The difference between the client’s old awards and our custom build was drastic.

Before working with us, the organizers used generic, mass-produced column trophies. They featured standard plastic dirt bike figures glued to the top of faux-marble bases. The sponsor logos were simply printed on standard paper labels and stuck to the bottom. They lacked identity and looked identical to the awards handed out at local practice tracks.

After our intervention, the event had a fleet of fully custom motocross trophies. The new awards featured sharp, geometric lines, exposed hardware, and vibrant UV-printed graphics. They looked like professional, industrial pieces of hardware rather than catalog order numbers. The visual transformation elevated the entire perception of the race series.

Materials & Build Process

Choosing the right materials is the most critical step in custom fabrication. We needed materials that were tough enough to survive a dirt track environment but precise enough to look pristine on camera.

We selected 3/8-inch clear cast acrylic for the main body panels. Cast acrylic provides superior optical clarity and machines much cleaner than extruded acrylic. For the backing plates, we utilized brushed aluminum composite material (ACM). ACM gives the industrial look of solid metal but at a fraction of the weight and cost.

The build process started on our CNC router, where we cut the 54 individual base plates and body panels. Next, the acrylic pieces moved to our flatbed UV printer. We printed the sponsor graphics in reverse on the back side of the clear acrylic, which protects the ink from scratching and adds a thick layer of gloss to the image. Finally, our team hand-assembled each unit using stainless steel socket-head cap screws, giving the awards a mechanical, heavy-duty finish.

Final Trophy Design

The finished product was a multi-tiered, angular award that perfectly captured the aggressive nature of motocross.

The Pro-Am class trophies stood an imposing 24 inches tall, utilizing three layers of acrylic and ACM. The amateur class awards followed the exact same design language but were scaled down to 16 inches. This scaling kept the event’s branding consistent across all divisions while reserving the most massive hardware for the premier riders.

Every award featured a custom-machined number plate design in the center, highlighting the specific class and placement. The exposed stainless steel hardware caught the light beautifully, and the heavy aluminum bases gave the trophies a satisfying, premium weight when handed to the winning riders.

Race Day Performance

Design theory doesn’t matter if the product fails in the dirt. We build our awards to withstand the chaotic reality of race day.

The trophies were transported to the track in the back of a gear trailer over miles of washboard dirt roads. Thanks to the heavy-duty hardware and thick acrylic, zero units sustained damage during transit. When the event staff set up the display table near the starting gate, the awards drew an immediate crowd.

During the podium ceremonies, the weather turned harsh. Strong crosswinds hit the presentation area, blowing over several track banners. However, our weighted base design worked exactly as intended. Not a single trophy tipped over. They survived the wind, the dirt, and the celebratory champagne sprays without a scratch.

Results & Impact

The reaction from riders, sponsors, and organizers exceeded expectations. Several pro riders posted photos holding their awards on social media, specifically calling out the unique design.

More importantly, the sponsors were thrilled. The title sponsor noted that their branding was perfectly visible in all the official podium photographs, which had been a major point of friction in previous years. Because the sponsor integration looked so professional, two presenting sponsors immediately committed to returning for the following season.

The event organizers told us the new awards changed the atmosphere of the race. Riders fought harder in the final motos because they actually wanted to take the hardware home. We are already in the planning stages for next year’s series, focusing on a completely new structural concept.

Key Takeaways

Building custom awards for dirt bike racing requires more than just a good graphic designer. It requires an understanding of the environment.

First, good design starts with event structure. Scaling the awards to match the importance of the class ensures the budget is spent where it has the most impact. Second, materials matter for durability. A track environment will destroy cheap plastics and lightweight bases. Finally, purposeful branding improves perception. When sponsor logos are integrated into the design rather than slapped on as an afterthought, the entire event feels more prestigious.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a custom trophy project take?

Our standard turnaround time is four to six weeks from the date of final design approval. This allows us time to source raw materials, program the CNC equipment, print, and hand-assemble your awards. For massive events, we recommend reaching out two months in advance.

Can you handle large events with multiple classes?

Yes. We regularly produce builds ranging from 50 to over 200 individual awards. We specialize in scaling designs so that your pee-wee classes, amateur divisions, and pro classes all have a cohesive look while varying in size and complexity.

Do you help with design or just production?

We handle the entire process. You do not need to bring us finished 3D CAD files. You simply provide your event logo, sponsor files, and a general direction, and our industrial design team will create 3D mockups for your approval before any material is cut.

Can trophies include sponsor branding?

Absolutely. Integrating sponsor branding is one of our core specialties. We use UV flatbed printing and precision routing to embed sponsor logos directly into the architecture of the trophy, ensuring maximum visibility without compromising the overall aesthetic of the award.
