Leadership Awards
Awards for managers, executives, board chairs and community leaders
Short answer
A leadership award recognizes how someone led other people: a manager who built a team, an outgoing board chair, a founder, a volunteer who ran a committee for years. We make them to order as custom-shaped layered acrylic awards, wood plaques with printed faces and perpetual awards with metal name plates, each carrying the recipient’s name and a citation. Leadership awards are nearly always one-off pieces, so there is no minimum order, and a design proof is sent for approval before anything is produced.

Recognizing leadership, not seniority
The hard part of a leadership award is that it can read as a prize for holding a title. The ones that mean something are specific about what the person did for the people around them.
That starts with deciding which kind of award it is:
- A recurring award with criteria. Manager of the Year, Emerging Leader, Mentor of the Year. Given every year, with a nomination process, to someone inside the organization.
- A one-time tribute. For an outgoing president, a retiring founder or a board chair at the end of a term. No competition; the award marks a period of service.
- A named award. Established in honor of a past leader and presented each year in their name to someone who shows the same qualities.
Each needs a different design. A recurring award should be identical every year. A tribute can be entirely individual. A named award needs room for the story of the person it is named after.
Who leadership awards are for

Managers and team leads
Recurring awards chosen by nomination, often from the manager’s own team. The citation should name what the team achieved.

Executives and founders
One-time tributes at a handover, an anniversary or a retirement. A fully custom piece built around the company’s own identity.

Board chairs and officers
End-of-term awards for nonprofits, associations and clubs, usually carrying the office held and the years served.

Emerging leaders
For people early in a career who led without the title. Often one of several awards in a matched set.

Mentors
For the person others credit with their own progress. The best citations here are written by the people who were mentored.

Community and civic leaders
Presented by chambers, service clubs and local organizations to people outside their own staff.
What form suits a leadership award
Leadership awards are given singly and looked at closely, so construction matters more than it does on a set of forty.
- Custom layered acrylic: shaped around a logo or an emblem, with printed and cut layers that give the piece depth. This is the usual choice for an executive or founder tribute. See custom awards.
- Wood plaque with a printed face: formal and traditional, and the right choice where the award will hang in an office. It has room for a longer citation. See plaque awards.
- Perpetual with name plates: for a recurring or named award, a perpetual kept by the organization records every recipient, and each one also receives a keeper. See perpetual trophies.
We build in acrylic, wood and metal. We do not sell glass or crystal, so if the organization has used those in the past, send a photograph and we will design an acrylic award with the same presence.
Writing the citation
A leadership citation should answer one question: what is different because this person led? Not the title, not the length of tenure, but the change.

Avoid quoting a famous figure on leadership. Attributed quotations are frequently wrong, and an original line about the person is always stronger. Employee award wording has more leadership examples, and appreciation plaque wording covers board members and volunteers.
Named awards and awards from a team
A named award honors two people at once, and the design has to make clear which is which. The permanent wording carries the name of the award and one line about the person it honors, so that a recipient ten years on understands it. The recipient’s own name and year go on a separate line or plate. Ask the family of the person it is named for before the wording is fixed.
An award from a team to its own manager works differently from one handed down by the company. It is usually a surprise, paid for by a collection, and personal in tone. Boss’s Day ideas covers what is appropriate when the gift goes upward.
If the award is one of several at an annual event, corporate awards covers how to keep a full set consistent, and how to write an award nomination helps the people putting names forward. More guides are in the Recognition Library.
Leadership Awards FAQs
What is a leadership award?
An award that recognizes how someone led others, as opposed to an individual result. It is given to managers, executives, board members, mentors and community leaders, either as a recurring award with criteria or as a one-time tribute.
What do you write on a leadership award?
The award name or a line of thanks, the recipient’s name, the role and years if it marks a term of office, and a short citation saying what changed because of their leadership.
What is a good award for an outgoing board chair or president?
A custom award or a wood plaque carrying the office held, the years of the term and one line about what the organization achieved in that time, presented at the final meeting or annual event.
Can you make a single leadership award?
Yes. Most leadership awards are one-off pieces, and there is no minimum order.
Can the award be shaped like our logo or emblem?
Yes. Custom awards are cut to shape and layered in acrylic, so a logo, crest or emblem can form the outline of the piece itself.
How does a named leadership award work?
The award carries the name of the person it honors permanently, and each year’s recipient is added on a line or a name plate. A perpetual kept by the organization plus a keeper for each recipient is the usual arrangement.

Tell us who and why, and we will design it
Send the recipient’s name, the citation, the role and years if they apply, and any logo. We will design the award and send a proof before anything is produced.
Tell us the date it will be presented and we will quote against it.
