Boss’s Day Ideas: When It Is, What Is Appropriate and What to Give

Boss’s Day is October 16. When the 16th falls on a weekend, it is observed on the nearest working day. In 2026 the 16th is a Friday, so the day is Friday, October 16. In 2027 the 16th is a Saturday, so most workplaces will mark it on Friday, October 15.

It is also the most awkward date on the workplace calendar, because the thanks travel upward. This page covers when it is, where it came from, what is and is not appropriate, and ideas a team can carry out together without anyone feeling pressed to spend money.

It is an observance, not a public holiday. Nothing closes, and no workplace is obliged to mark it.

Where Boss’s Day came from

The day was registered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1958 by Patricia Bays Haroski, who worked as a secretary at State Farm in Deerfield, Illinois. Her boss was also her father, and she chose October 16 because it was his birthday. In 1962 the governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, officially proclaimed the day.

Her stated purpose was to thank bosses who were good to work for and to help younger employees understand the work and pressure that supervisors carry. That is worth keeping in mind: the day was meant as appreciation for a manager who has earned it, not as a duty owed to every manager.

The etiquette: three rules

Because a manager has power over the people thanking them, Boss’s Day needs more care than any other recognition date.

  1. It is optional. Nobody should be expected to take part, and nobody should be asked why they did not. If the team is lukewarm, skip it. A forced thank-you is worse than none.
  2. Group gestures, not individual gifts. A gift from one employee to their manager can look like an attempt to gain favor, and it puts pressure on everyone else. Anything given should come from the team as a whole.
  3. Nobody should feel obliged to spend. If there is a collection, make it anonymous and voluntary, with no suggested amount and no list of who contributed. A card signed by everyone carries the same message as a present.

For managers reading this: the gracious response is to accept a team gesture simply, and to make clear that you do not expect one. Many managers tell their teams directly that a card is plenty.

Ideas that cost nothing

  • A card signed by the team. Still the standard, and still the right answer for most teams. One specific line from each person beats a row of signatures.
  • A written thank-you with examples. A short note listing two or three things the manager did this year that made the work better: backed a decision, made time, removed an obstacle.
  • A word to their own boss. A message from the team to the manager’s manager, saying what they do well. For many managers this is worth more than any gift, and it is the kind of upward feedback that rarely happens.
  • Lunch together. Everyone pays their own way, or the team brings food in. The time is the gesture.
  • A shared memory. A printed photo of the team, or a page of short messages collected from everyone.

For lines to adapt, see appreciation messages and appreciation quotes. Most of the wording works in either direction.

Something lasting from the whole team

Some occasions call for more than a card: a manager who built the team from nothing, one who led it through a hard year, one who is about to move on. In those cases a single award from the whole team, with a specific line on it, is appropriate in a way that a personal present is not. It is clearly from the group, it is about the work, and it sits on a desk or a wall rather than going home in a bag.

  • A desk award with the manager’s name, a line from the team and the year.
  • A wall plaque for a manager marking a milestone, such as a number of years leading the department.
  • A custom-shaped piece built around something the team would recognize: the product, the site, the project that defined the year.

Leadership awards covers what these can look like. We build them in acrylic, wood and metal, there is no minimum order, so a single piece is a normal order, and you approve a design proof before anything is produced. If the award is for a date, request a quote with that date so the schedule can be confirmed against it.

Wording for a team award to a manager

Keep it short, make it from the team by name, and say one true thing. Avoid “World’s Best Boss”: it is on a thousand mugs and says nothing about this particular person.

The pattern is the same four parts as any award: who it is for, why, who it is from, and when. Appreciation plaque wording has more examples, and the plaque wording guide explains the four parts.

What to avoid

  • Personal or expensive gifts. Anything that would be awkward to explain to a coworker is the wrong gift. Many employers also have written rules about gifts to supervisors, so check the handbook before organizing anything.
  • A visible collection. An envelope going desk to desk with names on it is pressure, however kindly meant.
  • Humor at the manager’s expense. A joke that lands in private can look very different in front of the manager’s own boss.
  • Marking it for a manager the team does not respect. Silence is acceptable. Nobody is owed the day.
  • Leaving out part of the team. If remote staff or another shift report to the same manager, they sign the card too.

If you are the employer

Companies sometimes ask whether they should organize Boss’s Day centrally. Generally, no: an instruction from the company to thank managers defeats the purpose. What a company can do well is recognize its managers itself, through its own program, on its own schedule. A leadership award presented by senior management, with a reason on it, does more than an organized round of cards.

How to build an employee recognition program covers where manager recognition fits, and the recognition calendar shows the other dates in the year.
