Employee of the Year Plaque Wording (and Other Employee Awards)

Employee awards usually repeat: a new name every month, quarter or year on the same design. That changes how the wording should be written. The permanent parts have to be right once and stay the same, and the changing parts have to fit the same space every time.

This guide covers the recurring employee awards most companies run, with wording for each and a section on the line most programs get wrong: the reason.

Permanent wording and changing wording

Split the wording into two groups before writing any of it:

• Permanent: the award name, the company name or logo, and any tagline. These stay identical every cycle, and an award whose name changes every year never builds any prestige.
• Changing: the recipient’s name, the period (month, quarter or year) and the reason. These are what the plate or face carries each time.

Write the reason, not a superlative

“For outstanding performance” could be said about anyone, which is exactly why it means little to the person receiving it. The reason line is where an award proves that somebody noticed what this person actually did.

• Weak: For exceptional dedication and hard work
• Strong: For training all 14 new hires during our busiest season
• Weak: For excellence in customer service
• Strong: For earning the highest customer rating in the company, three quarters running

If the reason is confidential or hard to state briefly, leave it off rather than falling back to a generic line. The name and the title can stand on their own.

Employee of the month and quarter

Monthly and quarterly awards are often a single perpetual plaque in a common area with a plate added each period, plus a smaller piece the winner keeps.
