Hydroplane and Outboard Racing Trophies
Heat, final and high-point awards for hydroplane, tunnel and outboard racing on a closed course
Short answer
Hydroplane, tunnel boat and outboard racing is run in heats on a closed course, and the awards follow that format: finishing places in each class final, often an overall winner for the weekend on combined heat points, and high-point champions for the season. Youth and junior outboard classes, the rescue and safety crew and the officials who run the course round out the list. We design the set from your club or event logo, in acrylic, wood and metal, with no minimum order and a proof you approve before anything is produced.

Heats, finals and points
Closed-course boat racing runs laps around a course marked by buoys, usually in several heats per class over a weekend. Some events award the final only; others award places on points earned across all heats. Settle which before you order, because it decides how many awards each class needs and when the names are known.
Classes range from small stock outboards and youth classes to modified outboards, tunnel boats and hydroplanes. A club weekend can have a long class list with a handful of boats in each, which means many small awards in one consistent design rather than a few large ones.
For offshore and general powerboat events, see power boat racing trophies. Every other boating event is collected on the boating event awards hub.
What a closed-course boat race awards

Class finishing places
First through third in each class final, or on combined heat points. Deeper classes sometimes award more places.

Weekend overall
An overall winner on points across classes or a fastest-lap award, presented once the last final is scored.

High point champions
Season champions and points places per class, presented at the club or region banquet.

Youth and junior outboard
Junior classes often award every driver who finishes as well as the top places. A first award keeps young drivers racing.

Rescue and safety crew
The rescue boats, divers, pit marshals and turn judges. The race does not start without them, and an award for the crew is one of the most valued on the night.

Hard luck and sportsmanship
Hard luck for the driver who broke while leading, sportsmanship for the crew who lent parts. One or two keep the banquet human.
A weekend and season award list
A typical list for a club running hydroplane, tunnel and outboard classes. Trim it to the classes that ran.
| Award | How many | What goes on it |
|---|---|---|
| Class final places | 3 per class | Event name, class, place, year |
| Weekend overall or fastest lap | 1 | Event name, award, year |
| Youth or junior finisher | 1 per junior driver | Event name, class, year |
| High point champion | 1 per class | Club name, class, “High Point Champion,” driver, year |
| High point places | 1 to 2 more per class | As above with the place |
| Rookie of the year | 1 | Club name, award, driver, year |
| Rescue and safety crew | 1 per crew or 1 overall | Crew name and a line of thanks |
Points settle the season names before the banquet. Points championship awards covers ties and eligibility, and boat racing season awards lists the full banquet in order.
Youth and junior outboard classes
Junior outboard racing is where most drivers start, and the award matters more than the place. Many clubs give every junior driver a medal or small trophy at each event, with the top places on a larger piece, and a rookie award at the season banquet.
A medallion in the club colors works for every finisher; a trading pin adds something to collect across a season. Keep the podium pieces visibly different so the places still mean something.
Shapes that suit hydroplane and outboard racing
A hydroplane or tunnel hull seen from the side makes a strong silhouette in cut acrylic, as do a turn buoy, a wake or the club logo. Printed in full color and layered over a background, the shape carries the identity; the class and place sit on a plate so one design covers every class.

What to send us
- The club or event logo and any sponsor logos.
- The class list and last season’s entries in each class.
- Whether you award the final only or places on heat points.
- The race dates and the banquet date for high point awards.
We send a design proof for the full set before anything is produced. For timing, work back from the date the awards must be in hand and contact us for the current lead time; how far in advance to order explains how.
Hydroplane and Outboard Racing Trophies FAQs
How many trophies per class at a hydroplane or outboard race?
First through third per class is the common minimum, with deeper places in big classes. Count from last season’s entries and add spares for classes that may split.
Should awards go to the final or to heat points?
Either works. Decide before the weekend and publish it, because it changes when the names are known and how many places you award.
What should junior outboard drivers get?
Many clubs give every junior finisher a medal or small trophy and keep larger pieces for the top places and the season rookie award.
Should the rescue crew get an award?
Yes. Closed-course racing depends on the rescue boats, divers and course officials, and a crew award is often the most applauded of the night.
Can the trophy be shaped like a hydroplane?
Yes. Acrylic can be cut to a hull profile, a buoy or your club logo and printed in full color from your artwork.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One high point plate or a full season of class awards follows the same process.

Send the class list and we will design the set
Send your club logo, the class list and how you award each class. We design the weekend and season awards together and send a proof before anything is produced.
There is no minimum order. Tell us the date of your race or banquet when you ask for a quote.
