Custom Race Medals

Finisher and placing medals for 5Ks, fun runs, charity races and triathlons, cut to the shape of your event

Short answer

A race needs two kinds of award: a finisher medal for everyone who crosses the line, and placing awards for the overall and age-group winners. We make custom acrylic medals cut to any shape and printed in full color with your race logo, worn on a neck ribbon, and design the placing awards to match. There is no minimum order, so a small charity 5K is as welcome as a large field, and you approve a proof before production.

A medal that looks like your race

Runners collect medals, and they know a generic one when they see it. The medals that get kept and photographed are the ones that could only have come from one event: the shape of the bridge on the course, the charity’s logo, the town skyline, the mascot.

Our medallion awards are cut to shape, so the outline of the medal is part of the design. Printing is full color, which means the race artwork goes on as it is, with no reduction to one or two tones.

This page is about ordering them. If you are still deciding whether every entrant should get a medal, participation awards covers when it works and how to keep finisher medals distinct from the podium.

The awards a race gives

Finisher medals

One for everyone who completes the course. The largest part of the order and the piece people remember.

Overall winners

Top three men and top three women, sometimes with a masters or nonbinary category. A step up from the finisher medal.

Age-group awards

Top one to three in each age band. A placing medal in a different colorway, or a small award.

Team and corporate awards

Largest team, fastest team, top fundraising team. Useful at charity events where companies enter groups.

Kids’ dash and virtual medals

A smaller or simpler medal for the children’s run, and medals the organizer mails to virtual entrants.

Sponsor and volunteer thanks

A plaque for the title sponsor and something for the volunteers who marshaled the course.

Finisher medals and placing medals are different jobs

A finisher medal says the person completed the distance. It carries the race name, the distance and the year, and never a placing. A placing award says the person won something, and it should be impossible to mistake one for the other on a table.

What each race award carries
AwardWho receives itWhat goes on it
Finisher medalEvery finisherRace name, distance, year, logo
Overall awardTop three men and womenRace name, “Overall,” placing, year
Age-group awardTop one to three per age bandRace name, “Age Group,” placing, year
Team awardWinning team captainsRace name, award name, year
Kids’ dash medalEvery childRace name, “Kids’ Dash,” year

Leave the age band itself off the age-group award. One design marked “Age Group, First Place” serves every band, so you are not left with spares for a band nobody entered.

How many to order when registration is still open

This is the question every race director asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on your own event’s history. Finishers are fewer than registrants, late registrations add to the total, and a first-year race has no history at all.

  • Start from last year. If the race has run before, last year’s finisher count and this year’s registration pace are the best guide.
  • Decide your policy on running out. Some races cap registration at the medal count. Others mail a medal afterward to anyone who misses out.
  • Raise it in the quote. Tell us registration is still open and ask what the options are for the quantity. It is far better settled at the start than on race week.

Leftover medals from a dated design cannot be used next year. If that worries you, a design without the year on the medal itself is one way some races handle it, at the cost of a medal that is less of a keepsake.

Shape, size and ribbon

Three choices define a medal. The shape is the outline, and a custom outline is what separates a designed medal from a disc. The size should suit the distance: people expect more from a half marathon than from a one-mile fun run. The ribbon is the part that shows in every finish-line photograph, so its color should belong to the race artwork.

Multi-distance events often use one design at different sizes or in different colorways, so the 5K, the 10K and the half are clearly a family. Triathlons and duathlons do the same across sprint and longer courses. A race series can design medals that fit together or line up as a set, which gives people a reason to enter every round.

Tell us which of these you have in mind and we will show it on the proof. Runners who collect all the events in a series are also good candidates for pins.

What to send us

  • The race name, the distances and the logo or artwork.
  • Your expected number of finishers, and whether registration is still open.
  • The placing awards: overall, age groups, teams.
  • The race date.

We send a design proof for the medal and the placing awards, and you approve it before anything is produced. Request a quote against your race date. Awards for other events are in the Recognition Library, and volunteer awards covers the people at the water stations.

Custom Race Medals FAQs

What is the difference between a finisher medal and a placing medal?

A finisher medal goes to everyone who completes the race and carries no placing. A placing medal or award goes to overall and age-group winners and states the result.

Can race medals be cut to a custom shape?

Yes. Acrylic medals are cut to any outline and printed in full color, so the medal can take the shape of your logo, a landmark on the course or the charity’s mark.

How many finisher medals should a 5K order?

Base it on last year’s finisher count and this year’s registrations. If registration is still open, say so when you request the quote and ask how the quantity can be handled.

Do small charity races meet your minimum?

There is no minimum order. A fun run with a few dozen entrants can order custom medals.

Should the year be on the medal?

Most races include it, because it makes the medal a record of that event. The trade-off is that leftovers cannot be reused the following year.

Can the 5K and 10K medals be different?

Yes. A common approach is one design in different sizes or colorways, so each distance is distinct but the event looks consistent.
