Coach Awards
Coach of the year, the coaches’ award, and the plaque a team gives its coach
Short answer
A “coach award” means two different things. The coaches’ award is given by the coach to a player, usually for effort, attitude or the things that never show on a stat sheet. A coach of the year award, or a thank-you plaque from the team and parents, is given to the coach. We make both, most often as wood plaques and acrylic awards printed with your team or league logo. There is no minimum order, so one plaque for one coach is a normal job, and you approve a design proof before anything is produced.

Two awards with the same name
Search for “coaches award” and you will find both meanings mixed together. They are ordered by different people. The coaches’ award is on the team’s own awards list, picked by the head coach and ordered with the rest of the banquet set. The award for a coach is usually ordered by a league board, a booster club or a team parent, and is often a surprise.
For a coach, a plaque is the most common choice because it hangs on an office or garage wall for years. Our wood plaque awards come in several sizes and can carry an etched face or a printed acrylic panel, as in the wood plaque with etching and the wood plaque with acrylic. For a player, the coaches’ award usually matches the rest of the team’s trophies.
If the team wants to give the coach something other than an award, coach gift ideas covers gifts and how to collect for them. This page is about the awards.
Coach awards we make

Coaches’ award (to a player)
The award the coach chooses: for the player who worked hardest, showed up for everyone, or made the team better. Matches the rest of the banquet set.

Coach of the year
Given by a league, conference or club to one coach across all its teams. Usually a plaque with the league logo, the division and the season.

Thank-you plaque from the team
Paid for by the parents or players and presented at the banquet. Often signed by the players or printed with a team photo.

Assistant coach and team manager
Smaller pieces for the assistants, the scorekeeper and the team parent who ran the snack schedule. Same design as the head coach’s plaque.

Years of coaching
For a coach reaching ten or twenty seasons with a club. The number of seasons is the headline.

Perpetual coaches’ award
A club-owned plaque that lists every coaches’ award winner by season, with a keeper for each player.
Which award are you ordering?
| Coaches’ award | Coach of the year | Thank-you from the team | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who receives it | A player | A coach | A coach |
| Who chooses | The head coach | League board, coaches’ vote or nominations | The team and parents |
| Who orders | Whoever orders the team’s banquet awards | The league or club | A team parent or booster club |
| Usual form | Trophy or acrylic award matching the set | Wood or acrylic plaque | Wood plaque, sometimes with a team photo |
| Name known when ordering | Usually not until late in the season | Not until the vote | Yes, from the start |
The thank-you plaque is the easiest to plan, because the name is known on day one of the season. Order it early and keep it out of sight.
Wording for the coaches’ award
The coaches’ award is the one award that should say why. A single line in the coach’s own words is enough. Keep it about what the player did, not about what they lacked.

The coaches’ award often sits alongside the MVP. If you are giving both, the MVP is usually the larger piece; see MVP trophies. The full list of other team awards is in sports award categories.
Wording for coach of the year and thank-you plaques
A league’s coach of the year plaque is formal: the title, the name, the league and division, and the season. A thank-you plaque from the team can be warmer and longer, and is often signed “from the players and families.”

More thank-you lines for coaches, mentors and volunteers are on appreciation plaque wording. If someone has to say a few words when it is handed over, how to present an award has short examples.
Picking a coach of the year in a league
A league award needs a short, written rule so it does not look like a popularity contest. Common approaches:
- Nominations from parents or players, then a board vote.
- A vote of the other coaches in the division, who see the work up close.
- Separate awards by age group or division, so the youngest teams are not compared with travel teams.
- A racing club or riding school may give an instructor or mentor of the year in the same way, chosen by the members.
Present it at the season banquet with the other league awards; the end-of-season awards hub covers planning the night. For leadership awards outside sports, see leadership awards. To get the plaque in time, work back from the banquet date and read how far in advance to order.
Coach Awards FAQs
What is a coaches’ award?
An award the head coach gives to a player, usually for effort, attitude or team spirit rather than statistics. It is normally ordered with the rest of the team’s banquet awards.
What do you write on a coach of the year plaque?
The title, the coach’s name, the league and division, and the season. A league logo across the top makes it official.
What should a thank-you plaque for a coach say?
The coach’s name, a short line of thanks in the team’s own words, the team name and season, and “from the players and families” or similar.
Is a plaque or a trophy better for a coach?
A plaque is more common, because it hangs on a wall and lasts. A trophy suits a coach of the year award that sits with the league’s other trophies.
Can you put a team photo on a coach’s plaque?
Yes. A team photo can be printed in full color on an acrylic panel mounted on a wood plaque. Send the best resolution file you have.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One plaque for one coach is a normal order.

Tell us which coach award you need
Send the team or league logo, the coach’s name if you have it, and the wording. We design the plaque or award and send a proof for approval before anything is produced.
One plaque is as welcome as twenty, and we ship nationwide. Give us the banquet date and we will check the current lead time against it.
