Chess Trophies
Awards for every section, grade and rating class, designed from your club or tournament artwork
Short answer
A chess tournament rarely has one winner. It has a winner in each section, place awards down the standings, class prizes for the best score in each rating band, and often a team award for the school that brought the most points. We design the whole set from your tournament or club artwork and build it in acrylic, wood and metal, cut to shape and printed in full color. A piece can follow the outline of a knight or a king. A single club trophy is a fine order, and you approve a design proof before anything is made.

One design across every section
Chess organizers count awards differently from other sports. A scholastic event may split players by grade, an open event by rating, and many run both kinds of section on the same day. Each section has its own standings, so each one needs its own first, second and third.
The simplest way to keep that under control is one design with the section name changed. That is what semi-custom awards do well: your artwork on a stock body, repeated as many times as the sections need, with the section and place printed on each. The HD Series and WB Series are the two bodies to choose between.
For a club championship that is played once a year and kept on a shelf, a fully custom award cut to the shape of a piece or a board is the better fit.
Chess awards by type

Section champions
First place in each section: open, reserve, under a rating limit, or by grade. The largest piece in each group.

Place awards
Second, third and further down the standings. Same design, a size or a colorway down from the winner.

Rating-class prizes
Best score among players in a rating band inside a larger section. They reward the player who beat the field around them.

Team awards
For the school or club whose top scorers add up to the most points. One plaque for the team, sometimes a small piece for each scorer.

Every-player medals
Common at scholastic events for the youngest grades. A medal with the event name and year, no place on it.

Special prizes
Top unrated, best upset, biggest rating gain, perfect score, and a club player-of-the-year at the season banquet.
Counting awards for a chess tournament
Work it out section by section. The count is the number of sections times the places you award, then the extra class, team and special prizes on top. Decide before you order how ties will be handled, because players finishing on the same score is normal in a short event.
| Award | How many | What goes on it |
|---|---|---|
| Section first place | One per section | Tournament name, section, “1st Place,” year |
| Section places | Top five or top ten per section | Same, with the place |
| Rating-class prize | One per class you advertise | Section and class, such as “Under 1000” |
| Top unrated | One per section with new players | “Top Unrated,” section, year |
| Team awards | Top three teams per section | School or club name added after the event, or left off |
| Participant medal | One per player in the youngest sections | Tournament name and year only |
Ties are usually broken by a tiebreak method the organizer announces in advance, and the trophies go out in tiebreak order. If you would rather name co-champions, order a second first-place piece so nobody leaves with a lower place award.
What to put on a chess award
Leave player names off anything handed out on the day. The standings are not final until the last round is in, and the awards table has to be ready before then. Print the tournament, the section and the place, and let the trophy carry the rest.

For a club championship or a season-long ladder, the winner is known before the banquet, so the name can go on. A club that wants one award to stay with the club and gain a name each year should look at perpetual trophies, with a plate per year.
Scholastic events, clubs and season awards
A school chess club’s year often ends with its own small banquet: most improved, best attendance, highest rating gain, the student who taught the beginners. Sports award categories has names that adapt to chess, and end-of-season awards covers how to plan the night itself. If every young player is getting something, participation awards looks at keeping it distinct from the place trophies.
A coach or a volunteer tournament director who has run the event for years deserves more than a thank-you on the announcements; coach awards covers what a club can give.
What to send us
- The tournament or club name and logo, in the best file you have.
- The list of sections and how many places each one awards.
- Any rating-class, team and special prizes you have advertised.
- The date the awards must be in hand, which is the morning of round one, not the closing ceremony.
We send a design proof and you approve it before anything is produced. Work back from your tournament date and ask us for the current lead time; how far in advance to order explains how to plan it. Other individual sports, including tennis and spelling bees, are in the Recognition Library.
Chess Trophies FAQs
How many trophies does a chess tournament need?
Multiply the sections by the places you award in each, then add class prizes, team awards and any special prizes such as top unrated. A participant medal for the youngest players is counted separately.
Can a chess trophy be cut in the shape of a chess piece?
Yes. Acrylic is cut to shape and printed in full color, so a piece can follow the outline of a knight, a king or your club logo.
Should the player’s name go on a tournament trophy?
Usually not. Names cannot be added until the final round is scored, so tournament awards carry the event, section and place. Club championships decided before a banquet can include the name.
What is a rating-class prize?
A prize for the best score among players inside a set rating range within a bigger section. Organizers advertise the bands in advance, and each one needs its own award.
How should we handle ties for first place?
Most organizers announce a tiebreak method and award in that order. If you prefer co-champions, order an extra first-place piece for each section where a tie is likely.
Can we reorder the same design next year?
Yes. The design is kept, so next year’s set can match with the year changed.

Send the section list and the logo
Tell us the sections, the places and the prizes you have advertised, and the date of round one. We lay out the set section by section and send a proof to approve.
