Most people who accept an award are not public speakers, and nobody in the audience expects them to be. What the room wants is simple: a genuine thank-you, a sentence or two that sounds like you, and a speech that ends before anyone looks at their phone.
Below is a structure that works for any award, followed by fifteen short example speeches for different situations. They are written to be adapted: change the names and details, keep the shape.
A structure that fits any award
- Thank the people giving it. The organization, the committee or the person who presented it.
- Share the credit. Name two or three people, or one group, who made the work possible.
- Say one true thing. What the work or the award means to you, in a sentence.
- Close. A final thank-you, and sit down.
That is the whole speech. Four parts, one or two sentences each.
How long to speak
Thirty seconds to one minute is right for almost every workplace, club or community award. That is roughly 75 to 150 words. If you are the main honoree of the evening, such as a retiree or a lifetime award recipient, two to three minutes is welcome.
If you were told in advance, write it down and practice it aloud twice. If the organizer has said recipients will not be speaking, a smile, a handshake and “thank you” into the room is all that is needed.
Examples for work awards
Employee of the month or year.
Thank you. I did not expect this, and I am very grateful.
Anyone who works in dispatch knows that nothing I do happens alone. Luis, Hannah, the whole night shift: this belongs to you as much as to me.
I like working here because people care about getting it right. Thank you for noticing when it goes well.
A sales or performance award.
Thank you to the leadership team for this, and to my customers, who are the reason there is a number to celebrate.
I also want to thank our operations team. I make promises, and they are the ones who keep them.
I am proud of this year, and I am already thinking about the next one. Thank you.
A leadership or manager award.
Thank you. An award for leadership is really an award for a team that made its manager look good.
To my team: you challenged me, you covered for me, and you taught me more than I taught you. I am grateful for every one of you.
A years-of-service award.
Fifteen years. I was told on my first morning that this job would be temporary.
I stayed because of the people, and I still look forward to walking in every morning. Thank you for this, and for all of it.
Examples for a team accepting together
When a team is recognized, one person should speak for the group, briefly, and name the others.
On behalf of all five of us, thank you.
This project worked because nobody on this team ever said “that is not my job.” Alex, Bianca, Jordan, Mei: it has been a privilege.
Thank you also to everyone in other departments who answered our questions at short notice. We know who you are.
We decided I would speak because I lost the coin toss.
We are proud of what we built, and prouder of how we built it. Thank you for recognizing the whole team and not just one of us.
Examples for volunteer and community awards
Thank you. I feel a little awkward accepting an award for something I enjoy this much.
I volunteer here because the first time I came, someone handed me an apron and made me feel useful. I have tried to do the same for everyone who walked in after me.
To the other volunteers: this is yours too. See you Saturday.
Thank you to the board for this honor.
This organization changes lives quietly, one family at a time, and I am proud to have played a small part. Thank you to the staff, who do the hard work every single day.
Example for a retirement award
Thank you, all of you. I promised myself I would keep this short and keep my composure, and I may only manage one of those.
I came here for a job and found a second family. I have worked for good people and with better ones. I have watched some of you start as trainees and become the ones in charge, and nothing has made me prouder.
I will miss the work a little, and I will miss you a great deal. Thank you for this, and for thirty-one years I would not trade.
Examples for sports, league and club awards
Thank you to the club and to everyone who came out every week.
I want to thank my teammates, who made the season fun even when we were losing, and the volunteers who set up the courts before any of us arrived.
See you all next season.
Thanks to the league for this, and to my family, who have given up a lot of weekends.
To the other competitors: you pushed me all year, and that is why this means something. Thank you.
Examples for when it is a surprise, a joke award or not your award
Surprised and unprepared. You are allowed to say so. Then thank, credit and close.
I truly was not expecting this, so I have nothing written down.
Thank you. To everyone I work with: you make this an easy place to do good work. I am very grateful.
A humorous acceptance. One light line, aimed at yourself, then a sincere one.
Thank you. I would like to thank the coffee machine on the second floor, without which none of this would have been possible.
And, more seriously, thank you to the team that puts up with me before I have visited it.
A joke or superlative award. Play along and keep it to two sentences.
Most Likely to Bring Snacks to a Meeting. I accept this on behalf of everyone who has ever sat next to me. You are welcome, and thank you.
Accepting on behalf of someone else. Say who you are, why they are not there, and pass on their thanks. Do not make it your speech.
I am accepting this for Renee, who is traveling tonight and is very sorry to miss it.
She asked me to say that this award belongs to her whole crew, and that she is deeply grateful. I will make sure it reaches her on Monday.
What to avoid
- A long list of names. Past three or four, name a group instead. Someone will be left out of a long list, and they will notice.
- “I do not deserve this.” It sounds modest, but it tells the people who chose you that they were wrong. “I am grateful” does the same job better.
- Starting with an apology. “I am not good at speeches” lowers the room. Start with “thank you.”
- Inside jokes and work grievances. The audience includes people who will not follow the first or enjoy the second.
- Reading from a phone. A small card is easier to hold and does not lock itself halfway through.
- Going past your time. If the organizer gave a limit, treat it as real.
If you are on the other side of the award
Reading this because you are organizing the ceremony and not accepting at it? Tell recipients in advance whether they will be expected to speak and for how long; it is the kindest thing an organizer can do. The award ceremony script and the guide on how to present an award cover the rest of the microphone, and the ceremony program guide covers the timings.
And if the awards are still to be ordered, corporate awards and employee recognition awards show what we make. We build in acrylic, wood and metal, there is no minimum order, and every design is approved on a proof before it is produced.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do you say when you accept an award?
Thank the people giving it, share the credit with the people who helped, say one sincere sentence about what it means to you, and finish with a final thank-you.
How long should an acceptance speech be?
Thirty seconds to one minute for most workplace, club and community awards, which is roughly 75 to 150 words. A retirement or lifetime award speech can run two to three minutes.
What if I am not prepared to give a speech?
Say that you were not expecting it, thank the organization and the people you work with, and stop. Two or three sincere sentences are enough.
Is it okay to be funny in an acceptance speech?
Yes, in small amounts. One light line at your own expense works well, followed by a sincere thank-you. Avoid jokes about other people or anything only a few in the room will understand.
How do you accept an award on behalf of someone else?
Introduce yourself, explain briefly why the recipient could not attend, pass on their thanks in a sentence or two, and say that you will make sure the award reaches them.
Planning a recognition program?
Giving the award, not receiving it? Send the award title, the recipient’s name and any logo, and we will send a design proof before anything is produced.
