Skating Medals

Competition medals for figure, speed and roller skating, plus test, show and club season awards

Short answer

A skating competition gives medals in many small groups: figure skaters compete by level and event, and speed and roller skaters race by age class and distance. That makes medals the right award for almost every placing, with a few trophies for overall and club honors. We make skating medals cut to the shape of your club or competition logo, printed in full color and supplied with a neck ribbon, and design any trophies to match. There is no minimum order, and you approve a design proof before anything is produced.

Why skating needs so many medals

A figure skating competition can run dozens of events in one weekend: freeskate at every level, compulsory moves, artistic or spotlight programs, and often pairs, dance and synchronized teams. Each event is a small group, frequently split again by age so that no group is too large. Most groups place their top few skaters, and many youth events give every skater something. Speed and roller meets work the same way by distance and age class.

So the medal is the workhorse. Our medallion awards come in three builds: a cast 2" round medal in gold, silver or bronze with a printed center, a cut acrylic medal in 3", 4" or 6" that can take any outline, and a steel medal with an acrylic face for the top placings. A skate blade, a skater silhouette or your rink logo can be the shape itself.

Trophies belong to the few awards that are won once: an overall high-point skater, a club or team championship, a coach’s honor at the season show. Those we make as custom awards in the same artwork as the medals.

Figure, speed and roller: how the medal count differs

The three disciplines build their counts from different things. Count them from the entry list, not from last year’s order, since the number of groups changes every season.

Ask your referee or meet director how many groups the entries produced once registration closes, then add a few spares for groups that split late. A medal that says the competition name, the year and the placing works for every event, so spares are never wasted on one group.

Awards for everyone, without diluting the placings

Learn-to-skate programs and the youngest competitive levels often give every skater a medal, and some events give a participation piece below the podium places. That is a club decision, and both approaches are common.

If you give everyone something, make the participation medal the same shape as the placing medals with “Participant” or the event name in place of the placing, printed in a fourth colorway. The podium medals still read as the prize. Participation awards covers when an award for every skater works and when it does not.

Test and badge awards are a different job. They are handed out one at a time across the year whenever a skater passes, so order them as a stock of blanks in one design and keep them in the skating director’s office.

What goes on a skating medal

Competition name, year and placing. Leave the level and event off the medal unless you want a separate version for every group. Put those on the results sheet instead.

For a club trophy that returns every year, such as a team championship or a coaches’ award, a perpetual trophy with a name plate per season keeps the history at the rink. Wording for longer pieces is in the plaque wording guide.

What to send us

  • The competition or club name and logo.
  • The number of event groups or races, and how many places each awards.
  • Any participation, test or badge medals, and the trophies beyond the medals.
  • The date the awards must be at the rink.

We design the medals and trophies as one set and send a proof. For timing, work back from the date the awards must be in hand and see how far in advance to order. Other sports and season pieces are in the Recognition Library.

Skating Medals FAQs

Should skating medals show the level and event?

Usually not. A medal with the competition name, year and placing covers every group, so you never run short in one event and over in another. The results sheet records the level.

Can the medal be shaped like a skate?

Yes. Acrylic medals are cut to any outline and printed in full color, so a blade, a skater silhouette or your club logo can be the shape.

Do you make medals for skating tests and learn-to-skate levels?

Yes. Order a stock of medals or pins in one design with no names and hand them out as skaters pass.

Can first, second and third be different colors?

Yes. One design printed in a different colorway for each placing is the usual approach. Cast round medals also come in gold, silver and bronze.

Is there a minimum order for a small club competition?

No. A small club meet with a handful of groups is a normal order, as is a large invitational.

Can we reorder the same medals next season?

Yes. The design is kept on file and reordered with the year changed, so a skater’s medals match from season to season.
