Sailing and Regatta Trophies

Regatta places by fleet and class, series champions, perpetual trophies and junior sailing awards for sailing and yacht clubs

Short answer

A sailing club usually needs three kinds of awards. Keeper awards for the top places in each fleet or class at a regatta. Series and season champions decided over many race days. And perpetual trophies that stay with the club and gain a plate with each year’s winner. We design all three from your club burgee or regatta logo, cut and printed in acrylic, wood and metal, with no minimum order and a proof you approve before anything is produced. We do not make silver cups or bowls; we make the acrylic and wood keeper awards and the perpetual bases and plates.

Many fleets, many races, one prize-giving

A regatta rarely has one winner. Boats race in fleets or classes, one-design fleets alongside handicap fleets, and each one has its own standings across several races. A weekend regatta with six fleets and three places each already needs eighteen keeper awards before anything else is counted.

Most clubs also run series: a summer evening series, a spring and fall series, a frostbite series in the cold months. Each series has its own champions, often in every fleet. And many clubs hold perpetual trophies that are decades old, each one awarded for a particular race or series and returned every year.

That mix is what we design for: matching keeper awards across every fleet, series awards that look like they belong to the same club, and perpetual bases with room for years of plates. Perpetual trophies covers plate planning in detail. Sailing sits with the other on-the-water events in boating event awards.

What a sailing club awards

Regatta places by fleet

Series champions

Overall winners of a summer, evening or frostbite series, by fleet. These are usually the larger pieces at the club’s annual awards.

Junior sailing awards

Medals for junior regattas and summer programs, and awards for most improved, best sportsmanship and junior sailor of the year.

Keeper awards and perpetual trophies

Many sailing clubs hold traditional perpetual cups and bowls, some of them older than anyone in the club. We do not make silver cups or bowls. What we make sits alongside them: a keeper award the winner takes home, so the old trophy can stay safely in the clubhouse, and new perpetual trophies on wood or acrylic bases with plates for each year.

A keeper award is often the most practical choice. The perpetual stays in the trophy case, the winner’s name goes on its plate, and the winner takes home a smaller award with the same name, the race and the year.

When a perpetual runs out of plates, perpetual trophies covers the options, from a second base to a board that lists past winners.

Many clubs also award the crew, not only the skipper. If so, multiply the keeper awards by the crew on the winning boats, or give crew a medallion with the same design.

Junior sailing programs

Summer junior programs and junior regattas often give every sailor something to take home, along with places in each fleet. A medal for every sailor and a trophy for the top places works well, and a design that keeps the same club artwork every summer gives returning sailors a set.

End-of-summer awards for a junior program usually include most improved, sportsmanship, a coaches’ award and junior sailor of the year. These are presented to families, often at a picnic or the last day of the program, so a smaller award works as well as a large one.

Design that belongs to the club

The club burgee is the obvious design element. It is the club’s own artwork, and it is what members recognize. Printed in full color on acrylic, or layered so the flag stands out from the backing, it makes every award recognizably the club’s.

Other designs work too: a sail cut as the shape of the award, a hull silhouette, the regatta logo, or the outline of the harbor or lake where the club races. Send us what you have, and we design around it.

Annual club awards, commodore plaques and sailor of the year are covered in yacht club awards.

What to send us

  • The club burgee or logo, and the regatta logo if there is one.
  • The fleet list and how many places you award in each.
  • Perpetual trophies to be plated this year, with a photo of the existing plates.
  • The date of the prize-giving or awards dinner.

We send a design proof for the full set before anything is produced. For timing, work back from the date the awards must be in hand and contact us for the current lead time against that date; how far in advance to order explains how to plan it.

Sailing and Regatta Trophies FAQs

How many places should a regatta award per fleet?

Many clubs award the top three in each fleet, with fewer for small fleets and more for large ones. It is common practice rather than a rule, so set your own and put it in the sailing instructions.

Do you make silver cups or bowls?

No. We make acrylic, wood and metal awards, perpetual trophies on wood or acrylic bases, name plates and medals. Many clubs pair an existing silver perpetual with one of our keeper awards for the winner to take home.

What is a keeper award?

A smaller award the winner takes home, while the perpetual trophy stays with the club. It carries the trophy name, the year and the winner.

Can you add plates to our perpetual trophies?

Yes. Send a clear photo of the existing plates so the new one follows the same layout. There is no minimum order, so a single plate is a normal order.

Can the award use our club burgee?

Yes. Send the burgee artwork and we print it in full color or layer it on the award. If you only have a photo, we will tell you if it needs to be redrawn.

Do you make medals for junior sailing?

Yes. Medals for every junior sailor, places in each fleet and end-of-summer awards, all in the same club design.
